Anyone who thought that mobile commerce would be a mere passing trend couldn’t have been further from the truth. Mobile commerce, or online shopping via a mobile device or tablet, is driving the majority of eCommerce sales today, and it shows no signs of decreasing in popularity. According to global studies by Statista, researchers estimate that mobile commerce will account for nearly 73% of total eCommerce sales by 2021.

It should be noted, however, that mobile commerce is not simply a different way for customers to shop online. The power of mobile commerce is already advancing eCommerce as we know it.

How Mobile Commerce is Changing eCommerce

Mobile commerce makes it easy for customers to shop wherever they are, without having to use a desktop computer or laptop. They can access mobile-friendly stores whether they’re on a break at work, on the bus, or lounging around at home. The convenience that smartphones provide should be enough to convince businesses to go mobile; especially since the number of smartphone owners is expected to reach 5 billion by the end of 2019.

Mobile commerce has also led to the development of new services for users and improved tools for eCommerce merchants to reach potential customers. Some examples of these evolving advantages include:

  • Mobile money transfers.
  • Electronic tickets and boarding passes.
  • Digital content purchases and delivery.
  • Online banking capabilities
  • Digital wallets and in-app payments.
  • Location-based marketing.
  • Mobile marketing, coupons, and loyalty cards.

Current Trends in Mobile Commerce

The most important thing to do first is to develop a PWA if your eCommerce site doesn’t have a responsive or mobile-friendly design. Mobile shoppers have high expectations for the stores they buy from, and the most important trends for businesses to follow today include:

  • Building a faster website. Consumers have little patience for slow websites; 70% of mobile shoppers will exit a site if it’s too slow for their liking.
  • Improving security. Millions of shoppers browse stores on their mobile devices, but the majority won’t actually make a purchase due to security concerns.
  • Creating great UX design. Websites need to have bigger buttons and simple site navigation so mobile shoppers can avoid misclicks and see the necessary details without having to zoom in.
  • Personalized experiences. 53% of online shoppers find that having a customized shopping journey adds more value to the experience, and 59% report that it’s easier to find interesting products when eCommerce sites can offer personalized recommendations.
